Matej Skerlj
In the heart of the Trieste Carso, in Sgonico (Sales),Matej Skerlj’s winery stands as one of the most authentic and uncompromising expressions of this rugged land. The Skerlj family has farmed these hills for generations: first through the grandfather’s mixed agriculture, then with the family’s osmizza and agriturismo.

Matej chose to continue the family’s winemaking tradition, focusing on Malvasia, Vitovska, and Terrano, grown on small plots of iron-rich red soil set among the limestone rocks of the Karst plateau. Here, the Bora winds, the sea, and the stone shape wines of strong identity, produced in very limited quantities (around 9,000 bottles per year) and crafted through long macerations and wooden cask aging.
Supported by his sister Kristina,Matej works entirely by hand, embracing the natural rhythms and the harshness of the territory. His wines are regarded as some of the most genuine and distinctive interpretations of the Carso.
